On 1 March 2019 Hahnemühle has started its first international Student Photo Competition. Aiming to encourage young professionals as well as up-and-coming talents to print their images. Especially, in today’s digital age, the importance of seeing and feeling one’s own print is abating. For this reason, Hahnemühle based its Student Photo Competition on the principle “Only a printed image is a good image”. Next to supporting and motivating young photographers in their printing experience, Hahnemühle also wanted to give creative and curious talents a medium to display their great work.
The competition had the motto: “Show us your series” and was open for photography students worldwide. In order to participate, they had to submit a series of five photos and a short description online. The topic, however, was not further defined. Thus, all participating students had the freedom to choose their own focus and style.
An internationally renowned jury ensured that the best photo series wins. The jury consisted of photographers, photojournalists, gallerists and other experienced photo industry experts. Their different expertise and perspectives created a challenge for every participant and fostered creativity. But could have also been motivation. Thereby, we could also guarantee an evaluation on a professional level. Our jury reviewed collectively all printed series and announced the three winners and two honourable mentions.
This year more than 700 students from 52 countries have faced this challenge. In the end more than 3560 images had to be reviewed.
